Kimberley cycling tour

Gibb River Road & Bungle Bungle 13 Day Cycle Tour - Darwin to Broome

Cycle and 4WD through the Kimberley with some of Australia’s most remote and magical landscapes, including the Bungles in Purnululu National Park and the Gibb River Road, in this journey through the Kimberley. Cycling, swimming, bush walking and four-wheel-driving from one magnificent gorge to the next… Perfect.

Australia’s North West is a land of extraordinary contrasts, where the red rocky landscapes of the outback meet the bright turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Walk through ancient gorges and swim in freshwater pools under plunging waterfalls. Encounter amazing native wildlife and fascinating local cultures. The maze of curious orange and black striped beehive shaped domes of the Bungle Bungle in Purnululu National Park is without a doubt one of Australia’s most unusual and fascinating landforms.

It’s a place like no other on Earth.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - Litchfield National Park, Nitmiluk, Edith Falls (LD)

We leave Darwin early and travel into Litchfield National Park, featuring numerous waterfalls cascading from a sandstone plateau called the Tabletop Range, intriguing magnetic termite mounds, historical sites, and the weathered sandstone pillars of the Lost City. Unwind with a refreshing swim and enjoy the downhill ride through Nitmiluk National Park to our camp for the night, Edith Falls.

DAY 2 - Victoria River, Lake Argyle (BL)

Today we turn westward through Katherine’s cattle country until we reach the scenic Victoria River region, where the sandstone ranges, scattered with Livingstonia Palms, welcome us into the Kimberley. The iconic Boab trees can be seen in all shapes and sizes before we reach the Western Australian border. From here, it is a wonderful ride to Lake Argyle, the largest man-made lake in the Southern Hemisphere, dotted with islands.

DAY 3 - Kununurra, Kimberly Ranges (BD)

Today we ride from camp through beautiful hills toward the township of Kununurra, a town that features in the movie ‘Australia’, then unload the bikes for a ride around the local area, before heading off to our bush camp amongst the spectacular Kimberley Ranges.

DAY 4 & 5 - Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle) (BLD)

Riding from near the entrance of Purnululu National Park, we spend these two days cycling, bush walking and four wheel driving in and around the amazing region. The riding becomes more adventurous and the scenery is just stunning. The rounded tiger stripped domes stretching into the wilderness are magical... especially viewed from a helicopter! (Optional & at own expense.)

DAY 6 & 7 - Wyndham, Parry Creek Farm (DAY 6-BL, DAY 7-BLD)

Leaving the Bungles, we travel to the Five River Lookout at Wyndham, WA’s most northerly town, before a great ride to Parry Creek Farm, located amongst Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve. You’ll enjoy a rest day here, where you can experience the birds and wildlife of the Kimberley at its very best. Waterfalls, swimming holes, canoeing, bird-watching and just relaxing – you’ll feel refreshed and ready for the next stage of your Kimberley adventure.

DAY 8-12 - Gibb River Road, Gorges, Tunnel Creek (BLD)

On each of these mornings you have the opportunity to cycle and to really experience for yourself the beauty and magic of the Gibb River Road... These rides travel along the most well maintained, and most scenic parts of this old, sandstone cattle track. Highlights of these four days include, Barnett, Galvins and Bell Gorges, the King Leopold Ranges, Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek... Cycling and driving from one magnificent gorge to another for swimming, bushwalking and relaxing!

DAY 13 - Derby, Broome, Cable Beach (B)

Sadly we leave the Gibb River Road, and travel towards the beautiful beaches of Broome. We visit Derby on the way, and its historical wharf precinct. We arrive in Broome in the late afternoon to be part of a scene that never changes... the spectacular Cable Beach.
