Waldheim to Barn Bluff Hut (12km, 7 hours)
Your 6 day journey begins from Quamby Estate as we make our way to Waldheim in Cradle Valley. From here we set off on the track through the first section of ancient temperate rainforest. Pass through the magnificent glacially-carved Crater Lake and traverse the steepest section of the whole Overland Track. What a way to begin your adventure! Finally we reach Marion's Lookout and admire the spectacular views of Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake.
Depending on the weather, we enjoy lunch by the serene Plateau Creek before continuing around the base of Cradle Mountain and into Waterfall Valley, taking around 4 hours. Here, we reach our accommodation at the base of the towering Barn Bluff. Today’s walk crosses an exposed alpine plateau. On a fine day, the views are spectacular but in windy weather the conditions can be exciting and sometimes challenging.
Barn Bluff Hut to Pine Forest Moor Hut (12km, 6 hours)
Wake up on Day 2 and enjoy today’s walk to the once notoriously muddy Pine Forest Moor! An optional side trip is available to Lake Will for those who are up for it. Traverse the changing landscape where glaciers once sat. Today, the plain is covered in grassland with ancient Pencil Pines sitting with their roots in the water. View the peaks of Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff to the north, and Mt Pelion West directly ahead.
Pine Forest Moor Hut to Pelion Plains Hut (10km, 5 hrs)
This morning we make the gradual descent to the base of Mt Pelion West and the Forth River. Take a break at Frog Flats before ascending out of the valley onto the beautiful Pelion Plains. From here there are a range of side trips on offer with swimming holes, old copper mines and the towering Mt Oakleigh in the distance.
Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut (7km, 3.5 hrs)
Optional 5 hrs to climb Mt Ossa
Capture the views of the surrounding mountains as you climb to Pelion Gap. Today's walk is at a more relaxing pace as you descend a further few hours down to the hut. Alternatively, choose the option of a side trip up Mt Ossa to make it more challenging.
Kia Ora Hut to Windy Ridge Hut (9km, 4 hrs)
Marvel at of waterfalls and majestic forests that you will encounter on today's adventure. Leaving the hut, we walk about an hour to Du Cane where an old hut still stands from the animal trapping days. From here, we stroll through some of the oldest forest in the National Park with King Billy Pines as old as 2000 years. As we walk above the Mersey River, we visit a selection of the three major sets of waterfalls in this area. Traversing over Du Cane Gap, we then descend beside the spectacular Falling Mountain to Windy Ridge Hut where we will stay for the night.
Windy Ridge Hut to Lake St Clair (9km, 3 hrs)
The feature of today is Lake St Clair - Australia's deepest natural lake which has formed over time by glaciers. We walk through cool temperate eucalypt forest and arrive at Narcissus at the northern end of Lake St Clair in time for lunch. Climb aboard for the spectacular 17km cruise back to Cynthia Bay. We travel through the highland lakes, descending the rugged Western Tiers through small rural towns and arrive back at Quamby Estate.
