Hobart - Tasmania

Hobart, on the Derwent River is Australia’s second oldest city and the old and new blend well together. It is a small cosmopolitan city offering all of the amenities of a large city and few of the hassles. Attractions range from rows of 19th century Georgian sandstone warehouses in Salamanca Place where every Saturday the famous Salamanca Market is held from 8.30am – 3pm. Salamanca is the nations
biggest, brightest and best outdoor market, with its craftwork and fresh local produce.

There is a grand finale for the end of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which runs from December 27 through to the Taste of Tasmania food festival in January.

Visit one of Australia’s most significant historic sites – the Port Arthur Historic Site, view wildlife close up at the Tasmanian Devil Park, stop to view the many natural wonders all along the peninsula.

Across the channel is Bruny Island where Captains Bligh and Cook once dropped anchor.

The closest World Heritage Area is Hartz Mountains National Park and nearby are the Southern Forests with their towering eucalypts. North of the city, along the east coast, visitors can wander white sandy beaches, cycle around historic Maria Island National Park, or dive into crystal clear waters.
