One of the world’s great drives is from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road. The Victorian section of the route stretches from Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula to the South Australian border. Along with amazing views, there are plenty of opportunities to stop en route for bushwalking, swimming, surfing and whale watching. Along the coast there are waterfalls and shipwrecks, boardwalks to wander at the Twelve Apostles, London Bridge, Bay of Islands and Loch Ard Gorge. Cape Otway is also worth a stop, being the most southerly point of the great ocean road that boasts Australia’s oldest lighthouse opened in 1848.

Weaving its way around Victoria’s southwest coast, the Great Ocean Road is an unforgettable journey along Australia’s most inspiring coastal drive. From Torquay to Apollo Bay, the road takes you past white sandy beaches, breathtaking cliffs, through rainforest and waterfalls, and past the spectacular rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles. Most of the small resort towns started of as whaling stations and fishing villages. Today the charming seaside towns invite you to enjoy great local food, offer stunning beaches and water sports in a spectacular environment.

The road also travels through two of the most beautiful national parks in Australia: Otway Ranges National Park and Port Campbell National Park. Explore the rainforest from a bird’s eye view at the Otway Fly in the Otway Ranges National Park, or take a seat in a helicopter to have a closer look at the gorges and rock formations in Port Campbell National Park.

Along the Shipwreck Coast, at Loch Ard Gorge, the poignant story unfolds of the Victorian-era sailing ship wrecked here, sparing only two lives. You can climb right down onto the sand where the survivors sheltered for the night until help arrived.
