The Ultimate Tasmanian Adventure Self-Drive Tour
This 11 night/12 day experience covers what we have been told are the most exhilarating or rewarding activities to do while in Tasmania. It is suitable for active adventurous people who want to explore the less visited Tasmania. Not all of these activities will suit everyone, don’t worry we have many alternatives for you to try out.
Daily itineraryDay 1 - Hobart to Tasman Peninsula
Arrive in Australia’s second-oldest city and southernmost capital; the town’s rich colonial heritage and natural charms are accented by a spirited, atmosphere: festivals, top-notch restaurants and hip urban bars abound. Attractions include the famous Saturday Salamanca Market; an outdoor market, with craftwork and fresh local produce and the Summer Theatre in the Botanical Gardens. Spend the day exploring the city, then collect your rental vehicle and drive to Eaglehawk Neck. Overnight.
Day 2 - Dive Waterfall Bay Caves & Canyons
Today you will be diving in Waterfall Bay; an area well known for its sea caves; the largest, Cathedral Cave, consists of a massive entrance (maximum water depth 21m) and extends back into smaller caverns with narrow tunnels and cross passages, the walls are covered with brightly colored invertebrates. This is spectacular diving from a photographic aspect. The caves are for experienced divers with excellent buoyancy control. There are other sites nearby, including some excellent walls to 18m with swim-throughs which are suitable for all divers. Once back on dry land visit Port Arthur; a small town and former convict settlement, this is one of Australia's most significant heritage areas. Created with convict labour, the impressive architecture and chilling prison facilities survive today for you to explore. Every building and feature of Port Arthur Historic Site has a story to tell. Day 3 - Tasman Peninsula to Bicheno
Drive along the coast road to Freycinet National Park; park at Coles Bay car park and Walk to Wineglass Bay, this spectacular Bay is voted in the Top 10 Beaches in the World. This moderate walk takes approx 1 hr 15 min each way and is well worth the trip. Then meet your guides for the start of your Twilight Sea Kayaking Tour. The Freycinet Peninsula and sea kayaking were made for each other as the sea kayaks allow you to really explore this spectacular coastline, passing quietly by wildlife such as majestic sea eagles. Discover the history of secluded coves such as Honeymoon Bay and hear tales of shipwrecked whalers. The contrasts are stunning - pink granite mountains, sandy white beaches and blue waters so clear you feel you can touch the marine life below. This is one of Tasmania’s unforgettable natural experiences. Overnight: Bicheno
Day 4 - Bicheno to Launceston
Bicheno is known for its laid back lifestyle and outdoor activities. Walks to Rocking Rock and the Blowhole or along the sandbar to Diamond Island Nature Reserve are popular or if you want to see wildlife there is the Penguin Tour and local wildlife park; here you can enjoy the wide array of fauna, including kangaroos and Tasmanian devils. Drive approx 2.5 hours to Launceston; Tasmania’s second largest city. Here are colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes that line the hillsides along the river banks. This city has a strong sense of identity, and has one of the best regional galleries in Australia – the Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk. Relax, explore the surrounds and visit the vineyards in the Tamar Valley. Stay 2 nights.
Day 5 - Full Day Mountain Biking Tour – Ben Lomond Descent
This tour is mostly downhill so hold on and enjoy the ride, it is one of the ultimate mountain bike descents with a total drop of 1050 vertical metres (3444 feet). Starting at the Ben Lomond Ski Village this awesome trip takes you down one of the most spectacular roads in Tasmania, Jacobs Ladder. The guides will take you through the eucalypt forests along some old four-wheel-drive tracks and onto one of the best single-track descents in northern Tasmania, part of the annual en Lomond Descent multi-sport race. You will then continue on fire trails and other single tracks to the finishing point on Blessington Road. It’s a blast! Head back to Launceston, and enjoy a night out.
Day 6 - Launceston to Mole Creek
Tasmania has a reputation for world class rock climbing on the famous Dolerite crags. There are over 900 recorded climbs in Launceston's Cataract Gorge alone. Enjoy a Full Day Abseiling and Rock Climbing in this climbers paradise, the routes provide crack and face climbing on good quality dolerite, mostly naturally protected but also with an ever increasing selection of bolted routes. The climbing will be tailored to suit your experience and ensure a great day of fun and adventure. Drive to Mole Creek (72 kms, 45 miles) Stay 2 nights.
Day 7 - Full Day Adventure Caving at Mole Creek
Mole Creek Karst National Park features richly decorated limestone caves with superb stalactites, stalagmites and columns, glow worm displays, subterranean streams and cathedral caverns. The Park is best known for the superb Marakoopa and King Solomons Caves, which are open to the general public, but its 1,345 hectares (3,324 acres) contains a total of 300 caves and sinkholes. There are a many wild caves you will be crawling and sliding through with helmets and head torches for real adventure caving. Caves range from walk-through caverns with spectacular formations to tight squeezes guaranteed to get you dirty!
Day 8 - Mole Creek to Cradle Mountain
Ready for a Full Day Whitewater Adventure on Mersey River? The First Drop, Wentworth Street, Berlin Wall and The Washing Machine? These rapids will have your heart racing as you race down the Mersey River. No experience is necessary to have a blast. The rapids are graded 2-3, the river is quite swift so there is little paddling. Your experienced guide will ensure your safety. Drive to Cradle Mountain-Lake St.Clair National Park. Stay 2 nights.
Day 9 - Cradle Mountain Guided Summit Hike
A must for the more adventurous, hike and climb to the summit of Cradle Mountain and enjoy lunch on 'top of the world' overlooking most of northwest Tasmania. Simply breathtaking. This full day walk is challenging and includes some rock scrambling. Your guides will lead you through stunning glacial carved landscape and continually changing vegetation. It is a must do for those who wish to experience Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.
Day 10 – Cradle Mountain to Mt Field National Park
Start the morning with a drive to Strahan Village; a small town with pioneering heritage on Tasmania’s West Coast. Strahan’s landscapes are wild and elemental – waves, weather and World Heritage Wilderness are the keynotes for this unique destination. Taste fresh local Tasmanian seafood then continue on to Mt Field National Park; here take either the 5-6 hour round trip arduous hike up to the Eliza Plateau, which has great views of central Tasmania or the 1½ hour walk to Russell Falls; one of Tasmania’s most treasured places, Lady Barron Falls and follow The Tall Trees Walk; which is dominated by the tallest flowering plant on Earth, the swamp gum (Eucalyptus regnans). Day 11 - Mt Field National Park - Hobart
Drive to Strathgordon; here is the ultimate adrenaline pumping abseil, The World's Highest Commercial Abseil, Gordon Dam - 140 meters in one continuous drop! The tour consists of three sequenced abseils (30m, 50m and 140m), the qualified instructors will guide even the most nervous participants to accept the ultimate challenge. It’s a rush! On completion, drive to Hobart and experience the nightlife! Overnight.
Day 12 – Depart Hobart
