Drive to Deloraine

Deloraine is a delightful riverside town with a historic streetscape classified by the National Trust. Set in the foothills of the Great Western Tiers mountain range, Deloraine's resident population of around 2,000. Arts and crafts still dominate with the town's many local galleries, craft shops and antique stores.

Deloraine's streets are lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings and make for a charming morning or afternoon stroll. Farm experiences in the area include award-winning salmon, honey, raspberries and cheese, close by are the limestone caves of Mole Creek Karst National Park.

The vegetation is rich and diverse including grassland, rainforest, and many ancient plants such as the long-lived and endemic King Billy pine and the unusual native deciduous beech. The park also provides a rich habitat for wildlife, including Tasmanian devilsquollsplatypusechidna, and several bird species.

Visit Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and follow the Enchanted Walk through rainforest bejeweled with frost or wander around shimmering Dove Lake beneath the black spires of Cradle Mountain. On the southern side of the park, walk the 18-kilometre (11-mile) circuit around Lake St Clair, Tasmania's deepest natural freshwater lake.
