By the time April hits in Alice Springs, it’s well into the autumn months and cooling down after the desert heat of summer. Autumn is well and truly here in April, which means you can trust that the harsh summer heat has finally made its way out. With cooler days to look forward to, it’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and soak up some desert sun while enjoying the many sights around Alice Springs.

Whether you’re hoping to sleep under the stars and find yourself mesmerised by the night sky, want to hike your way around the outback, meet some local wildlife, or immerse yourself in culture, Alice Springs is the perfect base for exploration.

The Kangaroo Sanctuary

Let’s face it, no trip to the outback of Australia is complete without at least laying your eyes on some of the local kangaroos! The Kangaroo Sanctuary is the perfect place to stop and learn all about these native wonders from what they eat to how they behave and more. You can even brush with fame checking out some of the stars of BBC/National Geographic’s Kangaroo Dundee.

Just 15km from Alice Springs, this rescue centre offers personalised care for the kangaroos, raising and caring for them until they are released back into the wild. The kangaroos come first, so they let them sleep during the day and allow you to visit in the afternoon where you can enjoy a guided sunset tour through their 188-acre reserve.

Megafauna Central

Alice Springs is steeped in so much history, it’s worth taking some time out to discover it. Megafauna Central is a great place to start, where you can escape the heat of the day and enjoy the cool indoors.

Learn all about the unique megafauna that roamed Central Australia about 8 million years ago, where you can meet the world’s largest bird and catch a glimpse of a massive crocodile. Megafauna Central is home to some of the discoveries from the Alcoota Scientific Reserve, which is a rich fossil site about 150km north east of Alice Springs. See the remains of around 3000 animals and uncover ancient mysteries.

Try a desert golf course

With the cooler weather April brings with it, you might find it’s the perfect opportunity to book in a round of golf. You might find that golf in the desert is a little different from what you are used to. The manicured greens are set against the stark red of the MacDonnell Ranges, with narrow fairways edged by rocky outcrops. 

Alice Springs Golf Club has recently been rated the 84th best Public Course in Australia by Golf Magazine 21, with many avid players flocking to Alice Springs just to play. 

At this fully-equipped club you will find restaurants and bars, a pro-shop, floodlit driving range, putting green, bowling green and a fenced children’s playground, for the perfect day out for everyone. 

Anzac Hill

Anzac Hill is one of the most-visited landmarks in Alice Springs, and for good reason. There’s no better place to enjoy panoramic views of this incredible town and the surrounding ranges.

The Anzac Hill Memorial is dedicated to all those who have served in defense of Australia, with plenty of commemorative signs and sculptures that line the way from the carpark to the top of the hill. It’s about a 15-minute hike from the base to Wills Terrace on the top, and you can even pack a picnic to enjoy at the top as you watch the sun set.
