Things to Do in Broome in Winter

Although both seasons in Broome have their advantages, some activities are only possible in winter: 

• The more remote areas of the Kimberley region are impossible to access during the wet season due to flooded rivers and boggy tracks. In winter, all the roads are open, allowing you to explore the region's rugged landscapes, gorges, and waterfalls.
• Hiking trails may be difficult to navigate during the wet season. The dry season, on the contrary, provides ideal hiking conditions, with clear skies and cooler temperatures. 
• The sea around Broome is pleasant for swimming, but still not warm enough to attract the dangerous Irukandji and box jellyfish. 
• Some of the region’s Aboriginal communities and cultural sites can be difficult to access during the wet season. Winter is the best time to take part in guided tours and cultural events that showcase the region's Indigenous traditions.

It’s worth noting that the period between mid-June and mid-August is the most popular time to visit Broome. Expect more tourists and higher prices and be sure to book accommodation and activities in advance.

The Staircase to the Moon phenomenon occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay during extremely low tide. The reflection of the moonlight creates the illusion of a staircase extending from the water's edge to the moon. Staircase to the Moon can only be witnessed during the dry season, when clear skies and low humidity offer excellent viewing conditions. Broome Courthouse Markets

Broome Courthouse Markets provide a unique shopping experience with over 100 stalls selling locally made products, including jewellery, clothing, crafts, and artwork. The markets also offer a range of delicious meals, snacks, and drinks, making it an excellent spot to grab a bite while browsing the stalls. The markets are open from 8 am until 12 pm every Saturday and Sunday between April and October. 

Whale watching

In winter, thousands of humpback whales migrate along the Western Australian coast. Head to the coast of Roebuck Bay, a popular feeding ground for humpback whales, to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures from the shoreline. Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

During winter, extremely low tides in Roebuck Bay expose the sunken wrecks of World War II flying boats, including the iconic Catalina boats. This is also the opportunity to learn more about Broome’s history and the impact the war had on the town and its inhabitants.

Dinosaur footprints

Broome is home to one of the world's largest collections of dinosaur footprints. The tracks date back over 130 million years and are thought to have been made by at least 16 different species of dinosaurs. Preserved in the natural rock formations, the footprints are only visible during the low tides in winter. The most accessible place to see the tracks is Gantheaume Point, a short drive from the town centre. 

Shinju Matsuri Festival

If you’re visiting Broome in winter, don’t miss the Shinju Matsuri Festival. Over a couple of weeks in August and September, the streets come alive with music, dancing, and food as locals and tourists alike come together to celebrate the town's rich cultural heritage. 

One of the festival's most popular events is the Pearl Harvest Yarns, where locals gather to share stories about the region's pearling history. Other highlights include the street parade and the Sunset Long Table Dinner, where you can enjoy a delicious meal against the backdrop of a breathtaking Broome sunset.
